Dimmer switch

Okay so my dimmer switch literally broke off. I was wondering if someone can explain how it works before I pull the column apart I see a metal rod disconnected going to the column I'm assuming that has something to do with the dimmer? Just looking for the best approach to this. Is there an easier way than pulling apart the whole column? 94 Tahoe dimmer cruise control turn signal combo.
 
Pull steering wheel, then you can get to it IIRC, been a while since I've had an obs column apart

If I remember correctly yes you have to pull the wheel to get the multi function switch out and the wiring snakes all the way up the column
